I like to complain about the heat when the season starts but this was almost worst. The temperature at the start of the game was 50 with gusty winds and it only got colder as the game went on. The good thing about it all is that it started at 6:00pm and was done by 6:57pm. I don't think the clocks stopped for much.
As far as the game goes, Javalina had his best game defensively with 2 strong solo tackles and another 4-5 assists. He told me earlier in the week that he had talked to the coach about starting on defense and was excited when the coach gave him the ok. They appear to have shifted to a 3-4 defense and he was sitting there at nose guard, which is fine but he was all over the field. The scariest play was in the third quarter when he followed the quarterback on a keeper play and he did grab him from behind near the sideline but when all the bodies got up, Mijo got up very slowly and hobbling, stepping gingerly on his right foot. He was about on the sideline already so he sort of hopped off to the bench and sat there for a bit. Wife told me to go over, but as usual, they sit us all on the one side and there is a gate they lock to prevent people from going over. I would have had to walk on the field or at least the track to get over, but our son can't sit still. Within a few minutes, he was up and moving around, I guess testing his leg.
I would have preferred he stay sitting, but he managed to get back on the field after hobbling around. After the game, he admitted that it hurt and he was walking with some pain on his right calf muscle. He said when he was tackling the QB, he fell back and landed on his leg with a bunch of other guys. That is the scariest thing, to see your boy getting hurt while essentially playing a game. I remember when Boy played and his best friend landed badly on his back and head somehow. He didn't get up for a few minutes and we ended up going on the field and then following them to the hospital. He walked away with a concussion. I am glad nothing like that has happened to any other boy in games we have seen, but it is always a worry.
But back to this game, it was a fairly close game considering the offense just did not move the ball. The wind just made it unbearable to be out there. There was like one good pass between the two teams, luckily it was at the end of the half because it would have put them very close to scoring. Wife says she remembers McCallum being a "black" school and it is located about a mile away from Reagan High School, but the team was 95% white. I guess it didn't matter in this situation, because they came ready to play. Their coach kept referring to the team as send out the baby squad and send out the JV team, so maybe they had two teams mixed together. They seemed more organized.
After going to eat at Fuddrucker's, we are now home, he has showered and is getting mama to make some hot chocolate to warm his body up. It is a perfect night to have taken the night off, I would have hated to go back into the night to work.
