It seemed a long time coming, but the boys finally won one. It really sucks that it took most of the season for the team to come together, but they finally have a decent quarterback that can at least run and a couple of other guys to help move the ball along. It was very cool to see Javalina chosen as a team captain at the start of the game for the coin toss. As he said, it was especially cool to be back in Burger Stadium which feels like home. After the game, he said he felt very nostalgic being there. Whether it was thinking back to junior high and all the games they played there, or the track tournaments and throwing the discus over in the pits on the far end, he said the night just felt right. It was almost a perfect night for football. The sun was out at the start of the game and maybe it was a little warmer than I would have liked, but in the shade cast from the stadium, it was just right. As the sun went down, it got a little windy, and it felt about as fall as it has felt all year.
The game started rough and with the same shenanigans as always. They did a 3 and out series and then punted which the other team moved rather quickly to their first score, luckily they missed their 2 point conversion. This seemed to awaken something in our boys as they seemed different in the kickoff, which they returned all the way. Travis then returned the favor and did the same thing, making the 2pt conversion. Crockett then ran a couple of plays before another long run got them in the endzone again, with the 2pt conversion after, which put them up 16-14. Travis then fumbled the kickoff and Crockett got the ball on about the 30 yard line and scored again, quickly, making the score 24, missing the 2pt conversion. It started feeling like our boys could win this one. The best series was a defensive stand by our boys that happened in the 2nd quarter. Travis drove all the way inside the 5, Javalina was put in the game on defense, by the way, he was involved on the stop on a run to his side, then they dropped a pass and another run got them to the 1 yard line. On 4th down, the center threw the ball over the QBs head and Crockett took over on about the 15 yard line. The offense managed to score once more and then they were up 32-14 at the half.
The 2nd half could not have gone slower. I was waiting and it was looking like Crockett was going to mistake its way into a loss, as Travis came out hungry and again drove the ball all the way and scored, making it 32-20. Crockett gave up the ball rather flaccidly and Travis drove again, and actually scored, but it was brought back because of a penalty that I did not understand, they were not penalized yards, just made to run the down again. Still, it stopped their drive and again on 4th down, the center threw the ball over the head of the QB, making it much easier for Crockett. Crockett managed one more touchdown towards the end of the game, and then we just waited for time to run out, with about 8 minutes in the 4th.
