Part of feeling shitty on Sunday means I stayed in bed all day. We saw a couple of series on Netflix and this one we found by chance. I had seen the title before and just thought it was the Marvel Thor movie with that rock creature and Jeff Goldblum. After slowing down and looking at the preview, it sounded more like a prequal but not set to the same tone as the Marvel universe. I kind of got over the whole Marvel world, once you can jump time and bring people back to life, if it is convenient for the story line, ehh, it becomes a cartoon. That whole Thanos arc was shit.
But anyways, this Ragnarok is set in Norway, and the actors are actually talking in their native tongue, but you can change the language to English in the options. A family of two boys and their mom go back to a sleepy little town, complete with its own fjord. In the prologue, the voiceover tells us that thousands of years ago their were gods and giants and in that town (Edda, or something like that), they had waged their last war. The gods were defeated and the giants just disappeared. This all makes for good storytelling, but are they going to have powers? I don't want to give it all away, but of course the trailer gives this much, the huskier boy ends up being Thor or as close as a human can be and the brother, although never defined, acts very much like Loki. When they go into the city, they have an interaction with an elderly couple, and the old lady awakens his abilities or something. Slowly, the goofy husky kid with the old man glasses starts looking stronger and more confidant. I lied that in regards to his hammer, it is a more normal working "sledgehammer" that the grandpa had with his tools. This is what helps him discover his powers as he gets upset one night and flings the hammer, it just disappears into the night. Later, he finds where it landed and he measures the distance to be like 1400 meters.
His brother is never mentioned as Loki, but he does things a dickhead would do, just to mess with his bigger brother. Then there is the powerful family, who if you need to hide in plain sight, why not be the powerful family and live like kings. They are all overly confidant and instantly unlikable because they are obnoxious and rude, not that the locals see that. Thor presents a problem because he is the only thing, if he does end up being a god, that can kill a giant.
The show is set mostly in the high school, so it's kind of a coming of age movie where Thor has to accept who he is and define the bad guys and who his friends are. The giants have the advantage of being there eons and controlling everything, but good always prevails. The series is only 6 episodes long, but each was 45 minutes long, so it took a few hours to get through it. It was exciting every time he discovered a little bit more of his abilities, and then to come into the last scene and have a fight. The show has been extended for a season two, so we are excited about that. It was very entertaining, we saw it all in one night.
