Wife had this movie on our recorded queue for a long while, I didn't think it was something I would enjoy. I liked a lot of it, but I did have a hard time believing some of the plot points. First off, I really like Bradley Cooper, he is a good looking guy, and since the Hangover and Silver Linings, oh and can't forget him as the voice of Rocket (Guardians of the Galaxy), I have been a big fan. Lady Gaga might be a little weird when doing award shows and crap, but the lady has talent. I do love watching her videos. Add to that a seasoned cast with Sam Elliott as his brother, freaking Andrew Dice Clay as her father, and an assortment of other cool guys like Dave Chapelle having cameos and maybe I should have jumped on and watched this sooner.
The story is something like this, Bradley's character is a big time musician celebrity but he is a huge drunk and after a show, all he wants is to find some more alcohol. He ends up in this small dive bar where it is all trannies performing, except for the one girl. He shows up just as the girl takes the stage. He instantly falls in love (it has to be for real love for the rest of the story to work), and from here on out, he only has eyes for her. They spend the rest of the evening talking about music and what not and the next day he sends his jet back to wherever she is from as his concert has moved along to the next city. She reluctantly joins after being pushed by her boss to go ahead and quit her job. Her dad is going on and on about making it in the music business is all about having the right look at the right time and he could have been someone, blah blah.
Almost instantly, Bradley's character takes her character and starts pushing her onstage at his venues and of course, she is a hit. Before long, her career is taking off, his is going downhill, mostly because he drinks too much. We see a crossing of paths, but even more I thought we get to see all facets of the musician's life.
In his path, we see the guy that has it all and he cannot handle the success, so he gradually loses it, the "could have been". There is also her father who is constantly talking about how he had a better singing voice than Sinatra, he is the "never was." And of course, with her, we see real talent and control, which I believe is when you truly see "a star being born", one that will last generations.
I don't want to give up the storyline even if it has been out for a couple years, but some of my hang-ups with it are that he seems like a drunk, why would he pick up only one chick? Seems like he could do what all musicians do and just pick one in every city. No way a drunk guy like we see can keep it together for one chick this late in life. Why would he want to help her career? There is being generous, but a guy on the edge of losing his mind isn't going to be interested in helping some unknown and sitting around waiting for her to become someone. All this seemed to be a little fantastical, but the story overall was alright.
