Saturday was a good day in that Boy spent the day with us, something that rarely happens anymore. He was saying that he is so close to the end of getting his degree, but he needs the motivation to get that extra last step across the finish line. His interpretation of that meant he wanted to go see watches, as I have been promising him a nice watch as his graduation gift. Saturday morning, Baby A had to once again head to campus with the team to review game film. He had a team meeting from 10:00am to noon. I told Boy this would be a good time to go to a couple of the watch stores we know of and see if some other watch struck his fancy. He is very much like me and when he focuses in on something, it is very hard to get him to change his mind. Still, since the watch I have been wanting for him has not been in stock the last two years, I was forced to scramble and find a new option that he would want and appreciate.
Honestly, there has been only one watch that he has totally loved since he first saw and that is the Omega meteorite dial "Grey Side of the Moon". We first saw it in Houston before he even graduated high school on one of Wife's conferences which took us to the Galleria Mall and we were first starting to appreciate fine Swiss watches. Still, this has always been a lot of watch and I was hesitant to promise this watch as it was over $12,000 when we first saw it, close to ten years ago.
Yesterday, we went to a small boutique store that sells a handful of brands to see if maybe I could get him to fall in love with a different watch but it is hard with the prices on some of these watches. He saw a lovely gold IWC watch, but it listed for over $15,000 and the steel almost identical watch with a beautiful green dial was still over $8,000. I like the Vacheron Constantin brand as it is one of the "holy trinity" or one of the top three of the Swiss watchmakers, but a very regular looking watch starts at $28,000. As much as I like the ladies working there, one of them is from the Ben Bridge that closed down at the mall, we were still not in love with their watches.
We then went to Korman Jewelers further up north and they have a much bigger store, with Rolex (if they had any actual watches), Omega, Tudor, and more. Boy saw a very nice looking blue ceramic watch which I had not noticed before and I have to say it went right to the top of the list as far as loving it.
This looked about right for Mijo, even if the price tag was $13,600. I figured we should keep looking because that is still a big pill to swallow. We looked at the Tudor line and he did like and honestly we almost settled on a Bronze Bay 58 which is a much more modest $4100, but we were just looking.
I will say we were just looking and the trip didn't end there, but the rest of the story is for another day as this blog is filled. I do love spending the day looking at watches, it is such a first world problem deciding whether to spend the equivalent of the cost of a small car on a "toy" for your arm that your phone actually does a better job of keeping track of. This is something Boy and I have always bonded over, looking at stuff that costs too much and appreciating its beauty.
