9/17/21 Parent's Real Fear?

It happened silently and we didn't even realize it was that serious for most of this week, but Baby A is injured.  He took a bad fall in the last game in the first quarter, where he said he took the defender and they both fell sideways.  He landed on his shoulder in a weird way and came up a little hurt, he thought.  Being the competitor he is, he didn't say anything to the coaches and played the rest of the game with pain.  It must have been the adrenaline and testosterone running through him, but as soon as the game ended and we asked how he was, as he stood there in the field, still sweaty and stinky from the game, he looked at us with pain in his eyes and said his shoulder was killing him and it hurt to lift his arm.  We were a little shocked because he didn't say anything to the coaches or trainers and we saw him play all the game through.

My best hope was that it was just a bruise or a muscle strain.  He went in and discussed it with the team trainer/nurse.  She said he should rest the arm and not do anything strenuous for a couple days to see if pain went away.  He's a jock and I don't think he could help himself, but he went and lifted weights and tried to do pushups to see how much he could get away with.  He realized it might be more serious when the pain was not going away, even as recent as yesterday (Thursday).  The trainer called Wife Wednesday night and suggested we might want to take him to see a doctor and maybe get an x-ray.  We did yesterday, and got some bad news.

The x-rays, three of them, showed a tiny little nick on his arm bone (humerus) up where it meets the shoulder at the round part.  The doctor or PA that looked at it was not even sure it was something, but she got a second opinion from their bone person and he said it was a hairline fracture.  Along with that, he also has bruised muscles in the area.

From a big picture, I guess we're glad it wasn't much worse, this is something that will heal, probably by itself, although we are going to see an ortho specialist on Monday.  From his viewpoint though, I know he is taking it a little hard because he dedicated his summer to training to make himself faster and stronger and this just ruins most everything he worked for.  Hopefully, for him, he can salvage the last part of the season and play the last few games.  This is not me wanting or needing him on the field, he truly loves to compete and I just want to see him do what he loves.  As a parent, I would rather he not put himself in danger, but also, we know that life is meant to be lived not hidden away in fear.
