1/24/18 Bright (Netflix Movie)

This movie is what I had been looking for last week.  I wanted something like Lord Of The Rings I was telling Wife, and this is about as different and close as you can get.  Will Smith comes out as the human assigned to be partners with an orc.  In this world, humans live alongside orcs, elves, fairies are a nuisance, like big bees as one is unceremoniously taken out with a broom in the first few minutes.  Will Smith, aka Daryl Ward is just coming back on duty after getting shot by an orc.  His partner is the first orc accepted into the academy, so it is a big deal for society to have him accepted, but none of the human officers trusts him, including Daryl.  He kind of blames him for letting the orc that shot him get away after it happened.  The orc is in a tough spot where he really is and wants to be a good cop even if the orcs look down on him.  Eventually, they are back to normal, doing normal cop stuff, until they come upon a house where "magic is being done and they find an elf and a wand.  Only "brights" can yield wands which most of them are elves, but there are like one in a million humans who are also brights and can thus yield a magic wand too.  If a "non-bright" human touches a wand, they explode and turn to dust along with anybody in their vicinity, but that is the only way to find out if you are a bright.
Several evil elves are trying to bring back the dark lord to restore magic to its proper place, humans have decided it is better to let it become folklore and not let it be seen out in the world.  The neighborhood is full of typical Mexican gangbangers and upon hearing about the wand, everyone wants it.  It is up to Daryl and his Orc sidekick to keep it out of the bad guy's hands.  There is a lot of action and even a little magic to boot.  What I heard after asking around is that this might possibly become a show on TV, most likely without Will Smith, although he does tend to make things better.
I love this idea of orcs and humans living in the same place.  The movie is not subtle about the relations between humans and orcs, relating somewhat to how it seems to be between the races where that kind of stuff is really bad.  I liked the off the cuff comment when an orc "escapes" by jumping 13 feet in the air, that orcs are not basketball players, they do not possess those type of skills.  Low to the ground and strong, that is why you find them mostly in the NFL on the offensive and defensive lines.  It just gave it a sense of realness to it, like it was so.  I would love to see this turned into a show on TV, I guess we shall see.
