7/11/16 Independence Day 2 Was Entertaining?

Independence Day 2 was a pretty good summer movie.  If you liked the first one, this was what the second part would have looked like.  I would have liked to have seen Will Smith, he had such a great run of summer blockbusters.  Most all the old heroes were back.  Jeff Goldblum, his dad, the old president Bill Pullman, and the kids from the first one are pretty much the heroes this time around.
This movie picks up 20 years after the first one, the world beat the aliens in 1996, and we took as much technology as we could from them.  We have laser weapons, and our planes and ships all fly with their technology.  All is going well, until a "mother ship" hears the distress signal far off in space and comes around to finish the job.  The goal of the aliens is to steal the molten core of a planet to use in their weapons development and to destroy enemy planets.  Right before the enemy shows up, an enemy of theirs is looking for other helpful alien forms who could help them conquer the aliens.  Since it shows up looking like an alien, we blow it up post haste.  the alien survives in a bubble and eventually communicates with some of the earthlings.
This attack is different than the first one where they first tested the humans before bringing down ships that were a couple miles in size.  This time around it is one large mother ship, over 3000 miles in diameter.  They try the same initial things, going at it with some thermonuclear devices, which they expect and counter pretty easily.  They then come up with a plan to draw the mother alien out, so they can attack her.  All the kids from the first one are first rate pilots, which is a little cheesy to me, but it keeps them involved.
Data from the Star Trek movies has been in a coma for the 20 years after being taken over by the alien in the first movie.  Most of the aliens caught have also been mostly comatose.  Everything changes when the new mother ship approaches.  Somehow, the aliens are connected and they are hooting and hollering in their prisons because "mama" is coming to save them.  All the people that had contact in the first movie with the aliens, have dreams or visions and they too react weirdly when the mother alien gets rowdy.  Upon waking up from his 20 year coma, Data goes right back to the lab, and starts contributing to figuring out how to save the world.
They use the other alien as a decoy to draw the mother alien out, and she comes at it with a vengeance.  Sacrifices are made, we cry, humans probably win, I don't want to give it all away.  There is an interesting new development, not sure if they are going to run with it, but the other alien mentions they have a secret planet where they have been training and gathering materials to attack the bad aliens, apparently, they have been destroying planets for a long time.  It seems like a handful of humans are going to go with the alien to get in on some training and then attack the aliens out in space.  Boy mentioned he read they were making a trilogy out of it, I don't know if that means from the first one in 1996 or the next movie starts a trilogy, but it could be a fun ride if they go with it.
