I had very mixed feelings about this season. First off, we are still living under the stranglehold Covid-19 has on the country and it would seem we should be home trying to stay safe. On the other hand, as bad as the numbers are for the virus nationwide, it doesn't seem to affect the younger population the same as it does the elderly and people with already diminished health concerns. We pretty much went all spring and summer hiding in the house and Javalina, now being called Baby Jesus by the coaching staff because of his long hair, went along with it. I guess as the fall year approached at the end of summer, the boy came out of hibernation and all of a sudden demanded to have the opportunity to play football.
It is a strange thing, in all aspects, actually. We don't have a vaccine, but the country now has a feeling like we got over this. The schools are trying desperately to get going and provide some stability and normalcy, while the economy is trying to spark itself into some sort of rally. Wife, working in a school has been "working" all through the spring. There were a few weeks when everything just shut down and it seemed that for the better part of three months she was home, but working online and communicating with her office daily, My work never stopped either. We had some changes, I am now parking by the bigger building and walking what appears to be close to half a mile to get to my lab, so I can walk through a temperature scanner before getting to work. We have also had the great fortune off taking care of business, getting our workload done for the day or two so we don't fall behind and then having the opportunity to come home for the night. Between this and Wife having been home for most of the spring and summer, I almost feel like we got a big break from the fast pace we had been living. Boy too, had been laid off in January, luckily he was still living at home, so he didn't suffer anything for it, other than feeling useless because he wants to work, was finally interviewed and hired in the last two weeks. He starts working next week at a big semiconductor company next week.
It feels like we reset and learned to live slower and just enjoy being together. I felt sad for a time that we stopped going to the mall almost weekly, we stopped chasing what the next thing we should be buying and just spent time at home catching up on sleep, movies, family, and adjusting to eating meals at home. With the new addition of my pellet grill, I even look forward to smoking meats on the weekend. This weekend, we are going to smoke a couple of beer can chickens. We tried one a few weeks ago, but this time we are doing two and as I have said, I am trying to take the lead and cook more myself without Wife doing all the work. I am writing this two days behind schedule on Saturday morning for the Thursday passed and just last night (Friday), we stopped on our way back home, bought the chickens for Saturday and got some wings which I grilled on high Friday night for a light meal/snack when we got home from visiting my folks. They were cooked in about 20-30 minutes on 350 and turned out spicy from the rub and crispy from the grill.
