I was just listening to Tom Segura on a Netflix show and he starts going on ab out the new laws in Denver and how one does not have to hide their weed anymore. This reminded me of the many times my dad would send us to the corner store, which had us crossing a four lane road which did come to a stop a few houses down, but it was still a little dangerous.
First of all, we live in the center of town, almost. The courthouse and police department are about 4-5 blocks away, but when we moved into our house, we were surrounded by empty lots, like four of them, which gave us plenty of space to roam and play. When you are shorter than the wild grass, you can hide in there, build forts or just play hide and seek. It was pretty cool. eventually most of the lots got bought, except for the one behind us and to the side. This was our shortcut to the corner stores. Thinking of today, I don't think I would let Javalina go walking like that at age 13, yet we did it all the time, way younger than that. My folks would just say it was different times.
Back when I was about 10 years old, we would go routinely and get my dad cigarettes, how I didn't pick up the habit, I just don't know. Not only would he send me to buy them, sometimes he would let me turn them on, to show us how hard it was. I remember that cold feeling when whatever (nicotine) in the cigarette cleaned your lungs, I should have become addicted to them. Other than that, the little stores were cool. We could always go buy candy, or sodas, and all it took was a little loose change, back in the day.
For a while, one of the stores or buildings was a quickie burger joint. It wasn't like a Dairy Queen, but one could pick up burgers and fries and they had video games, the real ones that would take a quarter to play.
Musings of a 40-something dad, living the dream in Austin, Texas. Trying to leave a trail of knowledge for my boys to nibble on.

6/7/18 Shhh, Quiet?
Man, it is quiet normally without Wife, she is the talker, the storm that makes us jump up and do the stuff we're supposed to do, but after two years of her being gone all week, she comes in growling to do this and that, but she falls in line with the rest of us when she realizes how tired she is and it would be easier to retreat to our bedroom and watch TV and chill. With school ending last week for Javalina, he decided to go with Mama and visit my folks for the week. This leaves just me and Robot Boy to man the house. His job is keeping his ass busy, typically gets up and heads out by 8:00am and then gets home around 5:30-6:00pm. First thing he does is go dives under his blankets for an afternoon nap.
That leaves me alone all day, which is fine because I am asleep, but I liked waking up and eating with Javalina after school, he is just a little demanding, knows how to get me to go eat here and there (he does prefer Whataburger too much, but that's OK), and adds just the right amount of conversation. We all like our computer time nowadays.
With my long shifts though, a workweek passes by quickly. It is already Thursday, I will go home, eat some cereal, wake, eat something, and come in for my last night of the week. Wife should be back with my young pain in the butt on Friday, hopefully at a decent hour. I think we have dug ourselves out of that hole that we were in when we lost our renters. At least I am not panicking anymore. I paid off Lowe's with some OT from a couple weeks ago and there should be more to pay off the tires I put on Boy's SUV this week, although Wife's SUV also needs tires. They might be pricier than I thought because they are so sporty and even though it is a tiny KIA Soul, she's rolling on 18s with skinny sidewalls, IDK. But I looked and the Michelins were like $250, Pirelli is a good brand too, and they were only $160 a tire, so I may go that route. Last week she was at 59, 800miles, which means she is averaging about 30,000 miles a year, not bad, considering she makes the trip up here every week, sometimes a few times a week.
I guess I still wouldn't mind new renters, my family for all their lamenting about how they can't visit because there is no room, are just so full of crap. I am hearing nothing but crickets, nobody is calling that they are on their way to visit and we have had two empty bedrooms for a couple months now, each with its own King bed.

6/6/18 Family Made Me An Offer I Can't Refuse?
A few months ago I got all excited when I found a waterfront lot about 10 minutes from my mom's house. It has 10 acres, what looks like a chunky deep part of the Nueces River along the back end of it and most of it has been planted in a very ordered way, like a tree every 20 feet in a square fashion . This makes most of the lot appear to be shaded, which is just another plus to everything else I liked immediately. I showed it to my brother and my mom who between them gave me "what the fuck is the matter with you?", "This is why you're poor!", "Fuck no, so you can bring your fucking friends from Austin?", "You can't afford it!" I was not that bothered by it, after all, it was Easter Weekend and I know how stressful it is to buy chocolate rabbits and a little BBQ meat, it just leaves people tired and cranky. My internal voice just said fuck it, you really want a place on a big river like Lake Travis with a view or as Wife wants, something on the coast. These peeps are small town Simpletons, I can't blame them for being scared to venture outside their homes. It was hard enough for my brother to actually come outside and buy the house next door to mommy.
Fast forward to Monday, my Mom sent me some pics with my nephew and niece out by a very pretty riverfront, nice and shaded and my little nephew is fishing, which I thought cool. I said something generic like very nice, and I would still like those acres so we could fish like that on our own property. My brother in law must have missed the roasting they gave me because he sounded interested. I am always looking at land and stuff and I happened to glance it was still listed for sale as of last week. I told him about it and sent the pics I had taken from the website. My Mom was receptive to the idea, she can be like two different people without "Grima Wormtongue" whispering in her ear. Now they want to look at the land and see if it is as good as the website says, see what it looks like for real.
I like the idea of parking our RV down there, if Wife is going to continue working in La Pryor, this would give her some more privacy and a place of her own. I technically have a nutritionist taking care of me, so I should start shedding the pounds and that should make me that much better for driving long distances and not getting sleepy. I worry that my a-hole bro-bro will whine that my Wife is staying there, so she is using up the dirt faster than him, so we should pay more and all that other childish shit that tends to come out whenever we try to do something out of his comfort zone, which is very tiny. I also want to see how my Mom is feeling about this after Grima gets another chance to convince her that somehow I am scamming everyone and somehow I will peel the ten acres off the land and move them closer to Austin, or maybe my scam is to steal all the trees. As smart as they all really are, their naivete astonishes me. How would they not benefit more than me, if they live ten minutes from the place, whereas I live three hours away? We'll see.

6/5/18 Looks Like I Have A Dietician In The House?
Ever since Boy started dating, GF has been in Shock and Awe at how we eat. She is your standard sized girl, close to 110-120, I am sure, and not trying to be rude or anything, but she keeps harping on our food. Last night she was concerned about my foot and we discussed it and the possibility of having gout. She poked and prodded and stretched and came to the conclusion that she did not think it was gout because she was able to touch it and I didn't cry in pain. I told her I was on the second week of pain and I thought it was. I can move the toe, so I don't believe it is broke. She then asked about my diet and I told her all the take out, and she could have had a panic attack. I told her that is why I started eating so much of the frozen fish, I thought it would be better than take out, she just offered to prepare meals for me and Javalina, if it would help.
I joked if she had a problem with fat people, "are you going to fix me?" She assured me she was just trying to help me. I am willing to try anything, especially if you can prove to me it is a cheaper way to eat and healthier to boot. Boy is very skinny but again, he does not eat better than us, he is just lucky because of his genetics. He keeps tubs of all sorts of candies in his room, even gives me some from time to time after he gets tired of some. That makes her shudder too. Her big thing is she used to watch her grandpa who was diabetic and says that right now if I can prevent becoming diabetic, I should do everything in my power. I tell her I understand, I just don't have the energy to work, and workout, and make perfect little meals. I just eat whatever and move along. Truth be told, it is probably this twelve hour shift that is killing me slowly, but I don't want to work more days, I could do 4 tens, meaning working Monday through Thursday nights, on 10 hour shifts. Two more hours for me a day would be nice, but I am worried, maybe after Wife's next raise, because I would lose money doing this.
As far as my toe, it is still hurting, I want to think it is hurting as much as it is because I have been on my feet all night, but who knows. I am avoiding sodas this week, if the pain doesn't go away, maybe I'll go to the doc next week.

6/4/18 Is It Gout?
Last Friday I cut the grass, I believe the day before I cut my toenails, and soon after, I was hurting like nobody's business. I just assumed I had somehow turned or caught my big toe as I turned the mower cutting the grass. Wife and even Boy were thinking maybe it was an ingrown toenail. There is a certain numbness like when I have an ingrown toenail, but this is further down, closer to the bone like the knuckle on the fingers and hand, but only on the big toe of the right foot.
My thought is that I had sprained it because although it hurt a bunch and still does, I find that I can move the toe, especially down, so I think that indicates that it is not broke. Again, I never hit myself or did anything that makes me say oh yeah, I hit it and possibly broke it or sprained it. After giving it two weekends of rest, and the workweek was a short one, I am still feeling pulsations of pain. Wife went back to the Googles and found another option, gout, maybe arthritis. My mom has a pretty severe battle going on with arthritis, but online it said arthritis comes on slowly, not overnight and certainly not as aggressive as what I got. Meanwhile, gout comes on suddenly and feels like a stabbing pain, according to one website. Thinking about it, we have an uncle who has been diagnosed with gout, so it exists in the family.
As soon as Wife arrived in Crystal City, she started looking up reasons for toe pain and as soon as she stumbled upon gout, she called me. It's like everything made sense, instantly because I don't recall hurting myself, and the readings say gout just comes on. I have not done anything to help myself, Wife wanted us to stop eating out every day after school and at one point about a month ago I tried these big fish squares which are frozen and in the toaster oven take about 20 minutes to heat. That was just perfect, as I could set them, run to get Javalina from school and upon walking into the house, I would hear the ding of the toaster being done. Two pieces of bread, a slice of cheddar cheese and the fish stick X 2 had both Javalina and myself forgetting about burgers and chicken strips pretty quickly. Surprisingly, fish is one of the first things on the list of gout no-no's. Another one is sodas, and I didn't see it on the list, but I am sure I am not doing myself favors by drinking all these sugar free drinks which are nothing but weird chemicals. It is really stupid, because I had every intention of starting to walk/jog with Javalina in the morning, and I thought by eating fish instead of burgers, I was somehow getting ahead, same with eliminating all the soda sugar and drinking Crystal Light Tea or Fruit Punch every day.
I am going to have to try harder and just drop down to fruits and veggies (salads) for awhile. I will try to avoid anything with preservatives, which until now, I had ignored as it was something for hysterical girls to whine about. I made a side bet with Wife, which I am sure she will hold up her end of the deal. I told her I would only get serious about getting some jetskis when we pay off our debt if I can manage to lose 100 pounds or so, get myself down closer to 300, 400 is too much weight for me to carry as I start becoming a frail old man. I did it one other time, and it wasn't hard, but I barely ate back then in college, I guess I need to do that once again.

6/3/18 Single Parenting Is The New Norm?
There is this new commercial playing in the theaters and on TV. It is a cartoon for Phoenix Online Classes or something like that, but what rubbed me the wrong way is the total omission of a father figure. Is it easier to put their message out of a woman succeeding in a tough world and providing for her kids without a man? I find it a bit insulting and a big lie.
People progress at their own speeds, I know we can't all be finished with school by the time we want, sometimes life gets in the way, but in my life experience, Wife was able to go back and get her Master's degree because we discussed it and I fully supported her. Of course, she did all the schoolwork and she has been a beast taking care of everything that was required and holding a job, but she also had me supporting her and while she was going to school, I was making at least twice her salary. I just don't believe she finishes the program as fast as she did without my support. My sister also needed to take classes post marriage and again, she had her husband in full support. Now she gets to be a bad ass Principal who has turned the Junior high around and solved a lot of discipline issues because she takes no shit and does not hesitate to get rid of any little a-hole, "Off With His Head!!!" if she could, but "off to the alternative school for you."
We could go back a generation and my mom did a similar program where she took a bunch of classes on nights and summers to become a counselor. Prior to that, she had been the typing teacher and she taught some business classes, both of which I am not sure exist anymore. Sure my dad was never half as helpful as I am around the house, but it was different times and he did help in paying the bills, so it's not like my mom was doing it alone, even if she had the house full with a ton of kids.
In the cartoon, the lady is working in an assembly room running a press or drill machine, she gets downsized to where she is the last one doing it in a world full of robots doing her job and eventually she gets the boot. There is a second of her feeling sorry for herself, then she starts taking classes and in the next scene the "she can do it." slogan becomes "she can do IT." It is a clever little play on a very old woman's empowerment BS. I maintain that anything like this would be at least for two years as an associate's degree, so it is definitely not overnight. I guess they don't need to show her living on food stamps and section 8 housing for a couple years? Not that there's anything wrong with that, I guess, but woman's empowerment still needs financial support from somewhere, so don't act like the men don't matter.
Seriously, women, quit fucking losers who are going to leave you saddled with a bunch of kids so you're not the sad sack trying to figure out what you are going to do when your job becomes obsolete. I realize I may lose my awesome job one day, which is why I encouraged Wife to do what she did, there may be a time she carries me. I just hate commercials like this, even if we live in a world where husbands are becoming an endangered species, don't glorify it.

6/2/18 Jersey Shore Reunion?
I hate to admit it, but I loved watching this show apparently starting eight years ago or something like that. It had a pretty good run of six seasons, considering they weren't doing much but getting drunk and causing self-induced drama, that is pretty good. What was good about the show? The fact that the guys played it straight and were just being guys trying to get laid was very cool. They even managed to bring some girls in even with all the cameras and I'm sure paperwork they had to sign. The girls were harder to enjoy, although they were all attractive girls, they would get drunk and act the fool, almost in every episode. Snooki was probably the breakout star, to me, because she got beat up frequently and yet was never crying "poor me." She was a little spitfire.
In the new episodes, only Sammi is missing, and although she might have been the prettiest of the girls, her and Ron were annoying on camera, because they acted like an old married couple. It was much more fun seeing Ron scamming on girls after they would break up, Sammi would only stay in and cry. Other than that, the rest of the crew is back and although they have had to grow up some, they still seem very familiar. Mike, the Situation, seems a little worse for the wear, as he is struggling and possibly facing jail time over some tax evasion issues which haven't been discussed, but their has been a hesitation for him to go and party. In the episode I saw, the girls went back home to go see their kids and stuff, while the guys stayed and went to go rent some nice cars. Mike was talking about owning a couple of Ferraris and other expensive cars, which he has lost all. Currently, he claims to be driving a car with neither leather nor A/C, cue the sad trombone, waah woh wuhhh.
In their efforts to prank each other, Pauly calls and invites Angelina who was not a regular, but was around a bit. In the old clips she is fighting with everybody, ending on the ground throwing punches with Snooki. I am not sure if she is staying to replace Sammi, but I thought she fit in. The show needs some single gals to chase after guys. Most of them seem involved in real life with real people, so they can't be acting like "hoes."
There was a follow up show, I don't know how I ended up on MTV, I rarely change the channel from HGTV (but I hate those fake ass couples redoing houses). Anyways, Floribama is the same idea but with a Southern charm to it, if southern charm means the girls have less shame and the guys are even more effeminate. I'm sorry, but if a girl jumps in your bed, at least suck her titties before saying "let's just be friends." I didn't know guys twerked, I thought it was a slutty girl thing, and who turns down a girl flashing her titties at you.
Oh well, MTV doesn't stand for Music TeleVision anymore, but the drama still continues, so there is that. We have You Tube for our music video needs.
