Although he can be an ornery little fella who forgets he is twelve, Chubs is also becoming quite impressive at the scale of 1:1 amongst his peers. He has managed to stay in the Einstein Jr. program, needing an 85 and above average on his grades, he is on the A team with the 7th grade Bobcats, and is also in the Symphonic band, playing Bari Sax, and loving it. Tonight was the bands turn to "show-off" and they had a recital where the three current bands played two selections. It was nice, we saw a couple of familiar faces, friend's of his who are also in band, and even some of the football players are splitting time, expressing their softer sides to the romantic arts.
Wife was quick to point out that he should have been on the woodwind ensemble, which looked to be the elite group, but because of his classes, he was not able to squeeze into the right band class. This is why he is with the symphonic band which looked to be the bigger of the bands. It was fun to see him dressed up all fancy in slacks and button down shirt which was the correct dress for the occasion, but I was a little pissed to see some of them in black polo shirts, and even one in just a black t-shirt. I can understand from a cost point that not all families have the means to go and purchase a "suit" for an hour program, but how about the one kid who decided to wear the button down white shirt when everyone else, including all the girls are in black?
Boy was trying to be funny and not show up to support the baby bro, but a couple of pissed off texts from Dad and Boy mysteriously showed up. He missed the performance but at least was there to take some pictures as a family afterwards.
Afterwards is when I noticed Chubs is on the verge of getting hugely popular with his face on the wall several times. Every game they have played is memorialized with a good 6-10 pics and the score on the bottom of the pics on the wall in the hallway that splits the gym and band hall. As I had just said, their current record is 2 wins, 2 losses and 1 tie. They have 2 games left to play and I would be happy if they just tied or split the games.
Chubs was quick to point out that nobody cares about the football players and I said don't kid yourself, this school has like 1200 kids and only about 100 are playing football between 7th and 8th grade. Of those, you also manage to get on the A/B Honor Roll which again got him on the wall posing in football gear with a football under his arm as an Honors Athlete. He has not become girl crazy and is actually aware that girls are actually kinda nutty right now, so maybe this new generation has more patience than I thought possible. I don't think it'll be long before some of those prettier girls notice our little hunk of a man-child. All that running around for football has him looking leaner and cleaner, he is losing some of the baby fat and starting to look manlier, as he doesn't hesitate to show me his armpits and how hairy he is getting. He also swears he needs to start shaving, that beaner 'stache is out of control, in his head. :)
