We cannot be on a staycation without going to the movies once or twice, specially since it is free to us. We ended up going to the movies Saturday night, amongst the painting of Boy's room, we stopped long enough to enjoy a chick flick trying to be a dude comedy. Rough Night, starring Scarlett Johansson, Jillian Bell, Kate Mckinnon, Ilana Glazer, and Zoe Kravitz has that feel of a bunch of smaller gag scenes put together to create a night or a weekend of crazy fun, like The Hangover.
Scarlett is the straight laced girl of the group in the middle of running an election trying to become a state senator while being engaged and attempting to plan her life around all that activity, including her bachelorette party. Jill is her BFF who is very intense and loyal. She will do anything for her friend and the proof of having done it with pictures. Kate Mckinnon is a lunatic on SNL playing many roles week in and week out, she is faking the Australian accent, but not so much the injuries she gets while being a good sport.
The other two girls are friends of the core group but not besties, they are very close to each other though as we see in flashbacks, they were a couple and because Zoe is going through a divorce, Illana sees a chance to get in there.
The movie is mostly hit and miss in the beginning, until they all end up together in the airport. The shenanigans are going according to plan until they hire a stripper and he arrives all hot and in a hurry. He comes on strongly to the Scarlett character who puts a quick stop to it, but Jill, who is the chubby one in the bunch aggressively attacks him and accidentally kills him. The rest of the movie is based on hiding the evidence.
There is a weird couple next door and their main purpose of showing up in the movie is to give a light "raping" to the Zoe Kravitz character, who is pretty hot and the scene plays out pretty good in the sand, other than no nudity.
The fiancé to Scarlett (Paul W. Downs), I have only seen him in the show with Ilana Glazer, in Broad City, plays it pretty off the wall. He calls to check on the fiancée, he can't get a hold of her and his friend suggests he gets there as quickly as possible, like the engineer woman a couple years ago who put on some diapers and drove across the US in record time. This leads to some of the funnier scenes, such as when he has to round up money for gas after his card is locked up from weird transactions. He has another pretty funny scene when a cop pulls him over for speeding and he has to prove he is not drunk.
The girls admit that they have been floating apart over the years, there is nothing like a murder to bring them back closer than ever before. It was not the best movie, and probably would be best suited as a DVD rental, it certainly was not the worst movie I have seen this year.
