I have to say, this one was almost a dud, considering it was a Tarantino movie. I went in knowing almost nothing about the reason or premise of the movie. Afterwards, Boy was saying it was supposed to be about the Manson murders. I have a hard time believing that was the idea of the movie since there was no imagery of a Charles Manson character or his followers other than the hippies who kind of hang out on the street corners waiting to get in stranger's cars but all live out in some old compound.
I did enjoy the cool way the Brad Pitt character lived and just went through life, good or bad. Leo Dicaprio's character was having a sort of melt down realizing he wasn't the hot shot he used to be just a few years earlier. These two have good chemistry together and the dialogue between them kept the movie going along, even when I wasn't sure what the point of the movie was about. There is a point in the movie where Brad Pitt is sitting around on a movie set and Bruce Lee is talking about how he could go in the ring with Cassius Clay (Muhammed Ali) and kick his ass, to which Pitt's character chuckles. This starts a fight between Lee and Pitt and it was actually funny to see Bruce Lee get thrown and how his eyes open up right before the fight when they tell him this guy killed his wife and got away with it.
Once presented with the idea of his acting life having a mortality rate, I think DiCaprio accepts it and figures he might as well make as much money as possible, going to Europe to make spaghetti westerns and then using the money to fund his retirement. He has a conversation with Pitt about having to let him go from his employ, but Pitt never leaves his side, up to the night they are partying when the Manson idiots show up.
I have to say the whole last ten minutes was the best part of the movie, Pitt has just decided to get "high" with his little acid cigarette which he bought from one of the Manson flower children, and then the other Manson people show up for no particular reason at their house. Just like in Inglorious Basterds, Tarantino changes history from the truth, for entertainment's sake, but the result is just so awesome and kind of hysterically funny. I don't want to give anything away from it as it is the best part.
Margot Robbie as Shannon Tate was just about perfect as she kind of looked like her. I am not sure why she wasn't utilized more specially since Tarantino changed reality so much, why not make her interact more with Pitt/DiCaprio more to include her more in the movie? She is just a vision of beauty plus she worked with DiCaprio in Wolf of Wall Street, they already had movie history together. Even as a "bad" Tarantino movie, it is still much better than the crap being put out in today's environment. Who needs to see Lion King Live or whatever new cartoon number 5 or 8 or whatever. Does the world need a Toy Story 7 or whatever number it is on?
