I honestly kind of take our house for granted in that there is rarely anything for me to worry about. I know big picture wise, we need to update our fence and we will probably do that next year, and Wife and I have decided it would be best to replace the carpeting with wood floors, but that is a choice and the carpets are now from 2007 when we moved in, so they are twelve years old.
Mechanically, though, I haven't had to worry or do much. The worst has been to unclog the pipes which I do a few times of year. Our shower gets a big ole hair ball, but it is always right there. I remove the drain cover and it is there, a big ole plug of hair that usually comes right out. The other drain that always causes problems has been our bathroom sink. It also likes to get clogged but gets unclogged real easy once I open it up.
anyways, this morning I was minding my own business sitting here without a thought about what to write about when Boy tells me that the sink downstairs is leaking and all the towels are wet. That sounds like more than a leak since we keep about 10-15 towels under the sink, that would be a lot of water to soak them all. I went exploring right away and noticed everything plumbing wise seemed dry which I thought cool, it is not the main valves under there. It must be leaking when the water is running. I turned on the cold water and after a few seconds the U joint where the water leaves started pretty much running into the space underneath. I turned it off and grabbed at the large plastic nut that is supposed to be tight on it. It was pretty loose, so I turned it tight and that seemed to solve it. Best I can think is that last time I shoved too many towels under there, I must have caused it to come loose because my boys don't mess with stuff like this. I believe it is already fixed, now I am just re-washing all the towels and everything else under there gets thrown away including a pretty good porno mag. I guess this wasn't a real emergency after all, which I just say whew!
The big ones that scare me mechanically are the A/C systems outside. They are working fine, but we have already replaced one of them entirely, the downstairs one and the other has had a few parts replaced. They make it feel like heaven inside the house and I am glad we have two units, because when one goes out, we can at least limp through the night with the other one on. Just last night I was saying to Wife when we went to our room "Is there any better feeling than laying on a clean cold bed and stretching around stealing the cold from the sheets?"
I should just consider us lucky for the last twelve years, but if this house starts up with problems, we are out of here, and pronto.
