I saw this movie on nothing more than the lead actress on the cover of the Netflix image is cute and a tad familiar. She's come out on a couple of other shows we watch, such as Married, and Parks And Rec amongst others. Looking at her IMDB, I didn't realize she has been on so many cartoons that we watch. The female is Jenny Slate, and although she has only been around since 2005, she has quite the long list of projects on Netflix.
Anyways, in this movie she is working as a stand up comedian, and she spemaks easily of her relationship which the boyfriend does not appreciate when his business is put on display. Because of this or despite of it after one of her performances he comes up to her and admits he has been having an affair with her friend "Becky" or whatever. This sends her into a spiral of depression and to add to that, her day job at the bookstore is also closing, so life is not going great. Enter a new guy who has perfect chemistry with her and they hit it off, ending with drunk sex.
After going back and forth whether to tell him or not, she eventually puts it into her comedy routine and he finds out. Along the way, she finds out that he is a student of her mother's. Her mother and her have kind of forced relationship but she mentions the boy's name and the mom quickly adds That is not the kind of guy you usually date. Guys you date tend to be smelly and more organic, which sort of makes the both of them laugh. When she comes back to tell her mom that she is pregnant but has already planned an abortion, her mom tells her a story of when in her youth, she too had a similar event, but instead of going to the doctor, she drove to New York in the middle of the night to go to some random ladies house and had a procedure done on a kitchen table. She relayed she was glad she was doing the responsible thing, even if it was hard.
The guy eventually finds out and accepts the outcome standing by her side in the after scenes of her procedure. He shows himself to be a good guy by being ever so calm and letting her sit and slowly heal at her pace. The last scene shows the camera panning out as they sit and watch Gone With The Wind , her laying on the sofa and he holding her feet in his lap, both looking relaxed. like they belong where they are at. She might finally have the focus she needed in life to move ahead, or not.
This was a very short movie that gave us a small glimpse into the life of this comedian who has to deal with a very serious decision. I think she does the right thing as I feel unwanted kids equal future criminals and troublemakers, not that this movie is about that. She also seems to have stumbled upon the right guy at possibly the right time, as we see the last guy she breaks up with is another in a long line of man/children.
