Boy has been pretty good as far as spending our money lately. He is working, so he doesn't or hasn't asked for money from us in a long time. Last week was his birthday and although it was his responsibility, I went to take care of his flat tire and ended up getting him new tires for his SUV. I did not need to but I got a good deal and it makes me feel better that my Boy isn't running around on balding tires.
It hasn't been one week since that event and now we find ourselves with possibly a big dilemma. He said he was going to check something on his laptop and it broke in two. This really seems like it could only happen if he wanted a new computer but he knows we're trying not to use our credit cards, so he would have to be tremendously selfish if he snapped it in half on his own. It kind of looked like wear and tear, but goddamn, the timing sucks as it is almost finals time.
He did offer up his money and said he was willing to get something in the $1000 range just to get him by for now. For him to say he is willing to cough up $600 says he is desperate. I asked him if he could get the case and move the components over himself and he kind of laughed at me, but this was Monday night. Yesterday afternoon he said he had found a place that sells the shell of his laptop, so hopefully for about $50 he can solve his problem and keep his high end computer going. He ordered it and it should be at the house by Friday. This is really kind of amazing. Problem surfaces, problem solved, without me getting involved. Maybe Boy will be alright.
This is his specialty though, spending money on electronics. It doesn't surprise me his laptop broke in half. He takes it everywhere and uses it like a tool. What a difference a generation makes. To me, my laptop stays by my bed, it is good for paying bills and looking at porn. These kids don't dare leave the house without their laptops, 5-10 minutes after him and his friends get together, they will all be connected via WiFi and probably breathing better for it.
I just hope the shell is a good enough fix, otherwise, it will be a weekend of running around to the electronic stores replacing something that will start at $1000 but end up at $2500. He is paying the difference, I have bought him enough computers I think.
