I just watched all three seasons of Broad City a few days ago. It is a cool little show focused around two dopey chicks who spend too much time getting high. They live in New York and every episode has them in a different scenario. Abbi is the more serious of the two. She wants to be a trainer at a high end gym, but is stuck as a "cleaner" as her shirt mockingly tells the world. She hopes for the day someone calls in sick or is murdered so she can move up. Ilana is the quirkier of the two, she has a job with a company similar to Groupon or something but she admits she needs to get fired. She has a pillow which she takes to the bathroom to sleep, her boss catches her sleeping with her eyes open, and generally is a perfect bad employee.
One of the running gags is having other famous people or celebrities coming in for an episode or two. Hillary Clinton appeared in an episode. Tony Danza, Janeane Garofalo, Alan Alda, and many others have come out as veterinarian, doctor, Tony Danza is Abbi's father.
I don't know if I like these new seasons, but more shows are going this route where they only make ten episodes and call it a season. They just finished season three, but have only thirty episodes available. Used to be, on network TV, a show would get 24 episodes a season. I guess this is good, as there are more outlets providing content, fewer episodes requires less of a commitment. I love the idea that both Hulu and Netflix who did not exist eight years ago are providing new original content. Hulu has not been as free with the nudity, but Netflix is acting like a cable channel, letting the boobies fly on a regular basis.
I am usually not a big fan of stoners being depicted as characters because they are so involved with their love of getting high, that that is all they focus on. Most episodes show them smoking or "vaping" which I guess they can get a high from that, somehow. Ilana, is kind of a hot mess, she ends up "naked" all the time, but Hulu is choosing to be more conservative and blur out the fun parts.
I can't say there is a general direction for the show, they seem to go about their day to day shenanigans, dating, going out to parties, meeting friends, and mixing all this with their workdays. Ilana has a gay roommate who she loves as the perfect man, Abbi has a female roommate who has yet to come out, but her boyfriend is always at her apartment. Most of her interactions are with Ilana and the roommates boyfriend who she cannot stand, but admittedly becomes more and more of a friend by season three.
