Crockett officially started its football season tonight, the first two games had been scrimmages. Best I can say is that they could have won. We showed up a few minutes late and the game was already going. It was a strange sight, Javalina told me they were going to play at Burger Baseball, which I had no idea the Burger complex had a baseball field. I looked to Google so I would at least drive to the right location when I got going and there is a baseball field on the opposite side of Burger Jr, where Bedichek was playing its 7th and 8th grade games last year. The baseball field is kind of hidden behind a large building which I am not sure what is inside of it.
Technically, the football field fit in the baseball stadium and they even thought of its placement in regards to the sun going down behind the bleachers so we weren't staring into the sun, but it just didn't really work. There was a tall fence to protect from an errant baseball, I am sure, but it made the field seem less friendly. We also had the problem of sitting all together, so we were all mixed with Crockett and Akins parents sitting in the same area. This just feels invasive, to sit next to people joyously cheering for the other team while you see your boys just melting away.
Javalina played well, he is a workhorse offensive lineman, even though he is a little shorter than most other linemen, he holds his own every time. The team has added more people, so he was able to give up his starting position as a defensive tackle. I would almost prefer he play defense, but he likes his responsibility of protecting the QB. I said earlier they could have won because we went into the halftime with Crockett up 14-0. Coming out of the half, Akins kicked to Crockett and it was a boom of a kick, the kid should have knelt it in the endzone. He decided to run it out and gained about 8 yards, but there was also a penalty that moved them back to the 4 yard line, I guess half the distance. They then fumbled, which is the worst thing to do in this instance. The defense was stout and actually stopped them but Crockett came right out, made a first down which gave them some breathing room and then they fumbled again. This time, Akins promptly scored and Crockett looked deflated from that point on. I am not sure Crockett got another first down the rest of the game, it's like a different team came out in the second half or they were playing scared. The coaches didn't help things. You don't make substitutions or send in players when the QB is already under center, that happened. Akins scored again and again, instead of taking a knee in the endzone, the kid ran out and got knocked down inside the 10 yard line. There was another lost series with no yardage gained and Akins just continued grinding, final score was Akins 22-14.
We could hear the Crockett coaches yelling stuff like "give me two linemen that want to play, these two have given up." They were also screaming "you need to wait if you want to come out, don't just walk off the field." They could still get a lot better, there were about 9 players that just joined the team this week and they should be in pads by next week, some of them looked oversized. Interestingly, the defensive coach asked Javalina how he felt and he responded that he would have liked getting in there more on defense and the coach told him he would get him more involved next week.
